Consistency rules explained: the rule that blocks payouts

The short answer

A consistency rule caps how much of your total profit a single trading day may represent. The limit varies by programme, so check the percentage that applies to your account and how the firm calculates it. At most of the firms we track that have one, breaching it delays your payout rather than failing your account, but the delay can run for weeks.

What the rule actually measures

Take a 40% cap and $10,000 of total profit. Your best single day may not exceed $4,000. If one day made $6,000, you are outside the rule until total profit reaches $15,000, at which point $6,000 is 40% again.

The uncomfortable implication: the way out of a consistency breach is almost always to make more money, not to wait.

The three penalties, ranked by how much they matter

Delays the payout. The most common outcome among the firms we track, and the least severe. Keep trading, let the distribution even out, request again.

Raises the profit target. Topstep does this in its Trading Combine: a best day above 55% of your profit raises the target instead of failing the account. Nothing fails, the bar just moves.

Fails the account. Rare, and worth checking for specifically because it turns a good month into a lost fee.

The tight ones to watch

A 15% cap - found on some instant-funding accounts - is a different animal from a 40% one. It requires roughly seven evenly sized winning days before any payout clears, which can mean a month of trading before the first withdrawal.

Instant funding with a 15% consistency rule is often slower to first payout than a two-step evaluation without one.

Which firms have none

Several of the firms we track carry no consistency rule on their standard programmes, and within a firm the answer can differ between programmes. The generated list is maintained from the database rather than written by hand.

Related questions

Can I fail a challenge because of a consistency rule?

Not at the firms we track, according to their published rules: most apply the rule at the payout stage, and a few raise the profit target instead. Firms change these rules, so check the breach penalty on the firm page rather than the existence of the rule.

Does the consistency rule apply during the evaluation?

It varies. Apex applies its rule only at the funded payout stage; Earn2Trade applies its 30% rule during the evaluation and not on funded accounts. Every firm page on PropScouting states which stage the rule applies to.
