Using EAs and algorithmic strategies at prop firms

The short answer

Most of the firms we track allow EAs in principle and attach a condition: the strategy must be uniquely yours, you must disclose it, or unattended systems need approval. Several do not allow bots you bought or downloaded.

Data checked 8 Sept 2026

The four conditions firms attach

Originality. Finotive Funding allows only EAs you built yourself, which excludes anything bought from a marketplace or shared in a group.

Replicable on a live account. FTMO allows EAs and algorithmic trading if the trading is legitimate and could be replicated on a live account. A third-party EA risks breaching FTMO's maximum capital allocation when other traders run the same strategy.

Approval for unattended operation. Several futures firms permit semi-automated execution but require sign-off for fully unattended systems.

No latency or feed exploitation. A strategy that profits from the simulated feed rather than from market direction can be voided regardless of how it is coded.

Copy trading is a separate permission

Running one EA across your own accounts and copying another trader's signals are different questions. The first is usually tolerated; the second is often a breach because it makes the firm's risk correlated across unrelated accounts. AquaFunded and DayTraders.com permit copy trading outright, which is unusual among the firms we track.

The rules that catch algorithmic traders anyway

An approved EA can still fail on a rule that has nothing to do with automation. Minimum average trade duration requirements - two minutes on some funded accounts - void high-frequency systems. Consistency caps penalise strategies whose returns are lumpy. And an intraday trailing drawdown will end any system that holds through open drawdown.

Can I use a purchased EA at a prop firm?

At some firms, no. Originality requirements exist specifically to exclude marketplace bots, because a widely distributed system creates correlated risk across the firm's book.

Do prop firms allow HFT?

Often not. Many of the firms we track prohibit high-frequency and latency-sensitive strategies outright, and each firm page states its rule.
