How prop firm payouts actually work
The short answer
Passing a challenge does not make your profit withdrawable. Four separate gates stand in the way: the payout cadence, a first-payout waiting period, a profit buffer above your starting balance, and in many cases a cap on how much you can take per cycle.
Data checked 8 Sept 2026
Gate one: cadence
Cadence is the advertised number, but on its own it says little. On-demand and daily sound dramatically better than bi-weekly, but a daily cadence behind a fourteen-day age requirement is slower than a bi-weekly one without.
Gate two: the first-payout waiting period
Most of the firms we track impose an account age before the first request, and fourteen days is the most common wait among the CFD firms. Some of the futures firms we track set no waiting period, so a request can follow as soon as the buffer or profit goal is met.
Gate three: the profit buffer
A buffer is a profit cushion you must hold above your starting balance before withdrawing, so that taking money out does not immediately leave the account near a breach. MyFundedFutures publishes the arithmetic explicitly: the buffer is the plan maximum loss plus $100, so $3,100 on a $100,000 Rapid plan.
Buffers are usually described in the payout terms rather than the challenge terms, which is why traders discover them after passing rather than before buying.
Gate four: the per-cycle cap
A cap limits how much you may take in one request regardless of how much you made. On Topstep's Express Funded Account, for example, each payout is capped at 50% of the balance and at $2,000 to $6,000 depending on account size and payout path.
If you expect to make more than the cap in a cycle, the practical effect is that your money comes out over several cycles rather than one.
Most consistency rules are checked at payout, not when you pass
At most of the firms we track that have one, the consistency requirement is checked when you request a payout, not when you pass. A trader who made their whole month on one day can pass the evaluation and then be told to keep trading until the distribution evens out. Read the consistency cap before you plan your position sizing.

Related questions
How long does a prop firm payout take?
Processing is usually one to three business days once a request is approved. The delay that matters is not processing - it is the cadence, the account age requirement and the buffer, which together can push a first payout several weeks past the day you passed.
Do prop firms actually pay out?
Several of the firms we track publish payout figures or payout proof on their own sites, which gives you something to check rather than take on trust. Each firm page says whether we found published payout proof and, where we did, what the firm publishes.
What is a payout buffer?
A required profit cushion above your starting balance before a withdrawal is allowed, typically equal to the maximum loss plus a margin.
